Freedom School 2018

A Freedom School is a six-week Monday through Friday reading and enrichment program developed by the Children’s Defense Fund in 1995 which has a proven track record for increasing reading levels from 1.4 to 2.2 grade levels over two to three summers that children participate in the Freedom School. Freedom Schools were birthed as a vision to end what is known as the “cradle to prison pipeline.”  We know there is a direct correlation between third grade reading test scores and incarceration in adulthood for at-risk, poverty and lower income children in our urban areas.

“Children who do not have access to books over the summer lose ground at a rate of three times faster than children who have access to books.  By high school, children who do not have access to books over the summer are reading at three reading grades below children who have access to books.”  Freedom School addresses that issue and last year 90% of our students maintained or increased some in their reading level. On Sunday April 22, all of the congregations of the Maumee Watershed District are invited at 4 pm for the kickoff of our 2018 Freedom School! YOU are welcome to our opening Choral Festival, Learn moreCome, learn more, experience the staff and some of the families and together let’s raise the finances to be in the lives of 60 children this summer!  This is amazing Kingdom work!

We are adding 1 more class this summer!

This means 10 more young people lives impacted through our Maumee Watershed District-Monroe Street Neighborhood Center Freedom School partnership.  Most of the $1000 scholarships come from our MWD congregations!  Some congregations give $250, some $500 and others one or more full scholarships.  What we each give makes a difference in these children’s lives.  Last year, 90% of the children in our Freedom School either maintained their reading level or increased in their reading level for the summer.  That’s a win!  If your church wants to contribute to Freedom School financially, or if you want to give as an individual, make out your checks out to The Maumee Watershed District with "Freedom School" in the memo line, then send to the office at 1729 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, OH 43537.  For more information or to have a speaker come present to your church, mission team or group, contact Rev. Elizabeth Rand,  Rev. Rae Lynn Schleif, or call 419-897-9770.  This is a mission ministry of the Maumee Watershed District, let's go team!
